Tasting Notes
When I started on this wine journey, I was on the quest for Gamay. Believe it or not, I had a difficult time finding any. I know more now, but I also think it is easier to find Gamay today.
There are some amazing Gamay to be found! Producers like Ricochet and Approachment are two that come to mind for me. I know there are many more, and apologies for only listing two. I also wanted to make sure you were aware of Walnut Ridge. They are in Junction City, and I have to tell you they are quite the gem. I am a huge fan of the Pinots and their Gamay! Their latest release of the 2023 Gamay isn’t like your typical Gamay. Looking at it in the glass, it is dark red with the outer rim giving off hints of a Gamay. On the nose and mid-palate, the darkness continues, and I adore it immensely! Most Gamays are brighter fruited, which is great, but this is truly something unique and wonderful.
Speaking of unique and wonderful, Walnut Ridge is the only winery I am aware of that does a Pinot Noir, Gamay blend. Their La Petite Fête is 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Gamay. Again, you wouldn’t guess this to be a blend with Gamay looking at the glass or on the mid-palate. Pleasurable through and through! You need to experience this for yourself!
Did you know Beaujolais Nouveau Day is coming up on the 21st? This would be a perfect time to grab some Gamay to also share with family for Thanksgiving.
Who are some of your favorite Gamay producers?
