Tasting Notes

The Oregon Sparkling Revolution is currently happening, with numerous new Sparkling labels emerging since my 2021 Sparkling report. Arabilis (@arabiliswines), a producer I previously spoke with, is now set to release their first Sparkling this Spring. Tonight I am highlighting a Grower Champagne instead of an Oregon Sparkling. Grower Champagne represents the standard that the Oregon Sparkling Revolution aims to reach, with Arabilis, and others, actively collaborating towards this goal. Thursday's podcast episode will delve into all things Sparkling, discussing the connections between Grower Champagne, the Oregon Sparkling Revolution, and Arabilis. Subscribe to the Weinnotes Podcast on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify to catch all the insider insights before the episode airs. The blind wine I selected for Kenny was a Suenen Oiry Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru (@suenenchampagne), chosen for its resemblance to the characteristics of Oregon wines. Here is some background on the label. Oiry is Aurelien's single Cru bottling from the Lieu-Dit Oiry. Aurelien's family dates back to the 1800s, when they were collecting and selling grapes to coops and Champagne houses in the Cramant region. His great-grandfather and mother were the first to bottle their own Champagne under the family name; their sons, and by the mid-20th century Aurlien's father, Daniel, had continued the tradition. It was Daniel who began making vintage-dated wine under Champagne Suenen. Aurelien took over in 2009 and immediately began converting the estate to organics.
