Tasting Notes
It's Wednesday already, and the deadline for Saturday morning's newsletter is fast approaching. This week I am featuring Nicholas Keeler and his wines at Authentique. Over the Thanksgiving break, I was fortunate to spend a few hours with Nicholas and taste some of his wines! If you want to know more, find the link in the Bio and sign up for Saturday's newsletter!
In the glass, it has a beautiful dark red color with a hint of a tawny rim, indicating slight age. On the nose, I get brighter red fruit and zero alcohol. The entry is this slow build of intensity to the mid-palate, where you are greeted with wave after wave of spice, red fruit, and acidity. Savoring the complexity of the mid-palate is needed. Otherwise, it is like passing through a small town in a blink of an eye and not noticing a giant statue in the center of town. When studying the figure more, there is something you don't notice at first. There is an indication of the spice on the tip of your mid-palate slowly dwindling into this delicate Pinot with an extended finish of luscious brighter red fruit you don't get to experience often. With the old vines of the Ridgecrest Vineyard and the 2017 vintage, this is one heck of a Pinot you need to try!
One last note on this wine: as it opens up, the mid-palate gives way from the brighter red fruit to medium red fruit, showing a more profound complexity.
