Tasting Notes
A perk of being a judge for a wine competition is taking home a few bottles of open wines to explore on a deeper level. I was fortunate enough to find a couple of bottles from Potter’s Vineyard! I explored the 2019 Cab Sauv from the Columbia Valley and the 2019 Estate Reserve Pinot Noir with dinner tonight.
First, the Cab Sauv shows classic deep dark red color in the glass. Great fruit on the nose giving off wafts of what you expect from a Cab Sauv. I paired this Cab with some leftover Cavatelli pasta and a pork-based ragu. The pairing soaked up the tannins I was getting earlier, tasting the Cab on its own, allowing the wine to show its true colors. On entry, it is slow and subtle for an anxious mid-palate to intermingle with the ragu and wine, giving way to a luxurious, long-lasting finish.
The Pinot Noir on day two is showing pretty darn lovely! In the glass, it offers a nice deep dark red, barely see-through. All of the classic dark red fruits on the nose make your mid-palate water in anticipation. The very first drop of wine on entry is subtle, slowly traversing to satisfy the mid-palate with those dark fruits giving way to a lasting finish of spice, a twinge of tannin, and acidity showing the potential of aging for years of enjoyment to come. Pairing this wine with the Cavatelli and pork-based ragu only improved it!
