Tasting Notes

The other day I decided to make ribs on the grill. It’s been way too long since I smoked ribs all day. I was doing yard work while they were smoking, and I must tell you, it was torture smelling deliciousness on an empty stomach. I also had too much time to decide what to pair with the ribs. While working in the yard, I had a bottle of Blanc de Blanc open. I know it’s far from a typical pairing with ribs, but I was curious. Would it pair? Needless to say, I chickened out for something with a bit more body and tannin structure to combine with the grease and bbq sauce from the ribs. I also added a bit of hot sauce before adding the rub. My choice was the 2018 WW Syrah screw cap from RR Wines. In talking with Wynn earlier this year, they experimented with a screw cap and cork for the Syrah. I am fortunate also to have a cork edition to see if I can tell the difference between the two enclosures. What I liked about this Syrah was how delicate it was. Some Syrah’s hit you in the face, but the subtle nature of the deep dark fruits capturing your attention on the nose and mid-palate was dreamy! The tannins were noticeable, but again not in your face. I am also a fan of how the wine accentuates the spices I put on the ribs for a crazy long finish. The wines Wynn makes are drinkable early on, and they also have all the right pieces and parts needed to enjoy in 10+ years. I want to hold onto the corked edition of the WW Syrah for a while to see where the wine goes, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to hold out…. . . 📰 Want to know more about Oregon Wine and Wineries sign up for my weekly newsletter.
