Tasting Notes
I talked about Oregon Riesling yesterday, but I think we need to go a bit further.
First, the topic of older Oregon Wines doesn’t surface all that often in conversation. Don’t get me wrong, it does come up, but it is a fraction of wine conversations. Most wine connoisseurs drink their bottles within two years or less of purchase. So the possibility of enjoying a 16-year-old Oregon Wine is a rarity.
Now, if you have been part of a conversation where you are consuming a 16-year-old Oregon wine, is it a Riesling? I am confident that 99.992% of those conversations center around Pinots or possibly Chards. However, older Oregon Rieslings are stellar!!
Younger Rieslings have vibrant fruitiness. Older Rieslings settle into their skin and demand a certain amount of respect!
The 2006 Chehalem Mountain Riesling from Holloran commands mad admiration in the glass with deep golden tones shining through and through. On the nose, there are slight hints of stone fruit. The mid-palate is where this wine truly shines with those older Riesling petrol qualities, but not overwhelming at all. The finish is subtle while being extremely gratifying. There are still high acidity concentrations, and who knows how long this could go.
Aged Oregon Riesling, put it on your bucket list!!
