For some strange reason, I've had the song "Me and Bobby McGee" constantly playing on loop in my head this week. It started on Tuesday, and here we are on Thursday with the words, "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose," pinging around my head.
I wasn't aware Kris Kristofferson originally wrote the song, and I have to say I am not a fan of his version. I am neither a fan of Willie Nelson's nor Jerry Lee Lewis's version. Give me Janis Joplin's version any day of the week!
Last week for the newsletter, I was playing catch up with all sorts of links from not sending out an email the previous two weeks. With that being said, Paul Gregutt posted his favorite wines from 2022. I have yet to taste many wines on the list, and he also posted scores. Typically, he stays away from scoring wines.
If you have extra time, pour yourself another cup of coffee and read Paul's thoughts on Dry January.
If you have been to L'Angolo, you know the gorgeous tasting room with the big sliding doors opening up into the vineyard. If you haven't been, read this article Sunset Magazine did on L'Angolo.
Kathleen Wilcox has a great writeup on Remy Drabkin driving for holistic equity.
Micheal Alberty posted an excellent backstory article on Potter's Vineyard you should check out.
Something I hadn't thought about before but is interesting to ponder is how the technology on tractors is getting more technical, leaving the owners in a bind when something breaks down. How will this affect wine in the years to come?
Here we are, the first episode of the podcast this year. I skimmed over an article earlier from another wine podcast that did over 1,200 interviews. Impressive is all I have to say since this is only my 16th episode.
For the podcast this week, the theme is the tiniest bit different. When I was at IPNC in July, a winery from the Sebastopol Hills located in the Russian River Valley presented its wines at a session. I was impressed by the three wines I tasted at the session and several other wines over the next few days.
You know me, it has to be more than just the wine to catch my attention. So I talked with Alex Kanzler, the winemaker at Kanzler Vineyards, and his cousin Morgan. In talking with the two of them, the winery's orbit is family with excellent, down-to-earth stories. Alex talked Morgan, his cousin, into moving from North Carolina to California.
After IPNC, I made sure to add them to my podcast interview list, and before asking if they were interested, I had to do some research. I stumbled
Today's podcast interview is with Alex and his wife, Breauna, from Kanzler Vineyards. I hope you enjoy and be sure to visit their website, sign up for their mailing list to follow their wine journey, and purchase wine!
